On Earth Day 2024, I had the profound honor of attending "An Interfaith Gathering" at the historic Union Theological Seminary on Broadway in New York City. As the executive director of the Latino Pastoral Action Center (LPAC), this event held special significance for me, symbolizing the unity and collective responsibility of diverse faith communities in preserving and honoring our planet.
The gathering, held at noon on April 22nd, was a testament to the powerful spirit of collaboration among different faiths, all united by a common goal: the preservation of our Earth. This event was sponsored by LPAC and co-sponsored by the Union Theological Seminary Center for Earth Ethics, the MICAH Institute, and The Peace Department. It was an assembly rich in diversity and profound in its purpose.
Bishop Raymond Rivera opened the event with expansive and welcoming remarks, setting a tone of inclusivity and mutual respect. His words resonated deeply, emphasizing the importance of coming together as a community to address the pressing environmental issues of our time.
Following Bishop Rivera, Natalia Alvarez de Jesus from The Peace Department shared her thoughts on the day's significance. Her reflections highlighted the interconnectedness of peace and environmental stewardship, reminding us that caring for our planet is also an act of caring for each other.
One of the most insightful moments of the gathering came from Karenna Gore, the founder and executive director of the Center for Earth Ethics at Union Theological Seminary. Her reflection underscored the ethical imperative to protect our environment, weaving together threads of spirituality, justice, and sustainability. Karenna's words served as a powerful reminder that our actions today will shape the world we leave for future generations.
The New York City Labor Chorus then graced us with stirring performances that evoked a deep sense of collective conscience. Their harmonious voices echoed the urgent call for environmental action, moving many of us to reflect on our roles in this global endeavor.
A highlight of the interfaith prayers and meditation was the reading of the Shanti Mantra by David Kalal from Hindus for Human Rights. This ancient prayer for peace, which beautifully implores tranquility for the heavens, the earth, and all living beings, was both soothing and inspiring:
"May peace reside in the high heavens,
And Quiet grace the vast skies,
May Tranquility blanket the earth.
And the waters be gentle,
May Plants be nurtured
And The Forests offer solace to all souls.
May kind spirits offer serenity
And Every being echo with calm,
Let ancient knowledge spread peace through the lands
And Truth sow harmony far and wide.
May peace infuse all things,
And flow into me as well.
On this Earth Day… May Peace Flow into All of Us."
These words resonated deeply, encapsulating the essence of our gathering. They reminded us that peace and environmental stewardship are intrinsically linked, and that fostering peace within ourselves is crucial for the well-being of our planet.
As I stood among fellow attendees, I felt a profound sense of unity and purpose. This interfaith gathering was more than a mere event; it was a declaration of our collective commitment to environmental justice and sustainability. It was a reminder that regardless of our diverse beliefs, we all share a common home on this beautiful Earth.
Reflecting on this Earth Day, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to be part of such a meaningful and impactful gathering. It reinforced my belief that true change can only come from collective action and that our faith communities have a vital role to play in this endeavor.
As we move forward, let us carry the spirit of this day with us. Let us remember the words of the Shanti Mantra and strive to cultivate peace within ourselves and our environment. By working together, we can create a future where our planet is respected, cherished, and preserved for generations to come.
On this Earth Day, and every day, may peace flow into all of us.
