LPAC/FLACS Collaborative

LPAC and Family Life Academy Charter Schools (FLACS) partner to strengthen Bronx families through a year-round Community Engagement Initiative that turns the school-community connection into real, weekly support. Together, we offer youth development and enrichment—basketball, martial arts, step, drumming, Super Saturday, counseling, and driver’s ed—alongside adult empowerment through multi-level ESL and leadership/advocacy workshops. The collaboration creates safe, structured spaces where scholars build confidence, discipline, and belonging, while parents gain the language and civic tools to show up fully for their children and their community—keeping young people off the streets and on pathways of purpose.

Basketball Program

The Greater Heights youth basketball program offers a positive outlet for young individuals by engaging them in basketball. This initiative encourages youth to develop team spirit and leadership skills through local, citywide, and interstate games. Under the community and family engagement initiative, the program has broadened its horizons, now forming basketball teams for elementary, middle, and high school students. This expansion aims to keep more youth off the streets and on the courts, fostering a supportive community environment.

Martial Arts

The Martial Arts Program is dedicated to instilling values of respect, discipline, and self-control in children. Through our teachings, we help develop character strength, bodies, minds, and self-esteem. Children in our program can grow and thrive in a supportive environment by engaging in self-defense techniques and physical and mental exercises. Our experienced instructors are committed to providing top-quality training in martial arts while nurturing a sense of camaraderie among our students. The program is not just about physical fitness; it is a holistic personal development approach focusing on mental strength and emotional well-being.

The Step Program/Hip-Hop/Dance

The Step Program is designed to introduce our scholars to a dance form with a rich African American history. Participating in the step program has proven to be a valuable experience for our students, as it not only exposes them to a unique and culturally significant dance form but also contributes to their personal growth and knowledge. Our students have embraced the energetic and rhythmic nature of stepping, using forward stomping, hand clapping, and intricate footwork to create instrument-like sounds and rhythms in each performance. This provides them with a dynamic outlet for self-expression. Through their participation, our scholars have learned important values such as teamwork, responsibility, interdependence, discipline, coordination, and the ability to follow instructions. The challenges presented by the step program push our students to work harder, strive for excellence, and continually improve with each practice and performance.

Drumming Program

The Drumming Program provides young scholars with wonderful opportunities to learn about the rich history of drums, the variety of drum types, and the diverse sounds they can produce. The program introduces children to essential musical concepts such as sound use, rhythm changes, and the importance of teamwork. By offering drumming instruction, the program fosters music appreciation and helps build confidence in children, allowing them to explore and experience their creative abilities. This holistic and well-rounded music education plays a vital role in the academic and personal development of children, helping young leaders engage with music in a meaningful and enjoyable way.

Drivers Education

The Driver Ed. Program for high school students teaches the skills and knowledge needed to drive safely and responsibly. The program typically includes classroom instruction on traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving practices, as well as behind-the-wheel training with a certified instructor. The goal is to prepare students for their driving test and help them become confident, competent drivers. This program is facilitated by one of FLACS’ parents who owns a driving school.

Student Counseling

The Youth Counseling Program for middle school students is a supportive service designed to help students navigate the challenges of adolescence. Counselors provide a safe space for students to discuss their feelings, academic concerns, and social issues. They offer guidance on developing healthy coping strategies, improving study habits, and building positive relationships. The goal is to support students’ emotional well-being and academic success during these formative years.
